Interims in demand

Despite some organisations operating recruitment freezes at the moment, they are interested in seeing the best accounting and finance professionals on a case-by-case basis and there are plenty of opportunities on an interim basis.

It’s not surprising that while recruitment freezes are in place we are seeing a rise in demand for interim accounting and finance professionals – just one way of avoiding the costs associated with a permanent headcount.

Clients are being very specific about the skills, experience and culture fit required.

There are a number of reasons our clients are recruiting interim staff: they need someone to simply hold fort while the business’ energies are elsewhere, they need someone to re-energise a flagging team or someone who can inject some real strategic insight into a particular area of the business. Whatever the qualities needed, it’s fair to say that at this time more than ever clients are being very specific about the skills, experience and culture fit required, as they need to get the recruitment right first time.

For those considering interim work, successful long-term careers are often seen by those who have a solid, credible career history and hold a range of skills such as: being a great people manager, a good motivator, having the ability to absorb complex issues, get quick results and adapt to different industries. The danger, though, is that it can be difficult to really develop depth in their portfolio of skills; breadth is less of a problem as they’re regularly hopping from one role to another.

So, for those looking to learn and develop trade skills, interim-management is probably not a wise career move. But for those who have reached a stage in their career when they feel they’re not developing any more, then interim management could be the perfect challenge needed.
