Accounts teams remain small but stable

Law firms’ accounts departments are remaining stable despite media reports on redundancies affecting support functions. While this has been the case amongst many law firms, where support functions are usually hit first, it’s unusual for this to involve the accounts departments. These departments usually run at a lean headcount anyway, and tend to be pretty stable regardless of the economic climate.

Teams in the Top 100 and US firms continue to remain steady. If we are seeing any uncertainty, it tends be firms at the smaller end that are struggling a bit more. We are starting to hear reports of concern from employees but this is more a reflection of the relentless media coverage and ensuing consumer fear than changes in the market itself. There are plenty of positions at the non-qualified level with billings and credit control roles in abundance and good candidates are being snapped up quickly. At the senior end, positions are stable – in the current climate, saving money is of utmost importance to firms and so naturally, an FC or FD is going to be highly valued.
