Savvy accountants take a commercial approach

Increasing numbers of talented finance professionals are looking outside traditional disciplines such as management and reporting roles to focus on opportunities with a customer focused approach. Companies are seeing the need for their finance and accounting staff to be more orientated around client activity or “customer connected”.

Major UK organisations are creating new roles for business support managers in business partnering; transferring mid and senior level managerial jobs over to a new structure.

This is by no means a new approach, but we are seeing a shift in demand as companies seek to ensure that their business units are more commercially focused. Companies are developing structures where senior accounting and finance staff take on business partner style roles, sitting with a senior managers and directors advising them how their actions impact their unit and feed back business insights.

Teams such as sales, marketing and procurement benefit as they can see the impact that their decisions have on the business in real time. Parties benefit in two ways; accountants are able to understand the drivers within the business are as well as providing market analysis, trends and recommendations in return.
