Scotland’s market prepares to do battle with London
North of the border, Scotland’s largest cities are experiencing a very different set of events to their English brethren.
The Scottish legal market has huge potential for growth, and has not been affected by the credit crunch to the extent of their southern counterparts. Certainly this is the case in terms of recruitment activity.
Whilst candidates are a lot more cautious in making a move, law firms are continuing to recruit and are crying out for talent in particular areas of growth, such as banking, commercial property and employment. In particular, we are witnessing a real demand for English-qualified solicitors as Scottish firms look to boost their English Law practices. Not only are Scottish firms considering a move southwards, but in tandem, we are seeing a migration from London to Scotland, many candidates of which qualified in England, but are Scottish born and bred.
This has been fuelled in part by the perceived work-life balance of private practice in Scotland and the increasing expense of living in London, but also by the quality of work on offer in Scottish firms. Perhaps the bright lights of London are not shining as brightly as they once were…
